I have always enjoyed listening to speakers. As a small boy I would always focus on the sermons in church. I love the sound of words, listening to an actor like Richard Burton or John Gielgud on tape. I’m also a great fan of the scripts of US shows like Six Feet Under and The Sopranos.
I like to provide a service which is flexible, professional and has one goal: the delivery of a truly exceptional speech.
How do you work?
It’s best to start with a chat on the phone. I need to establish who you are, your objectives, the theme, the venue and an analysis of the audience.
When I have this information confirmed in writing, I can then call you back to give you an idea of what I can do for you and a quotation for how much it is likely to cost. If you choose to go ahead, I then write a script, tailored to your needs.
Do we need to meet?
For one-off speeches, I can usually get a good idea of the approach required – just through a telephone conversation.
If you want me to write speeches for you regularly, it will be necessary to get to know you and gain a more detailed understanding of your physical presence, thoughts and attitudes.
Can you send me samples?
I have a blog on which I discuss speechwriting issues. I include observations, tips for public speakers and funny things which I notice. Those, together with my credentials, should be enough to give you an idea of the way in which I work.
How much does it cost?
For social speeches, there is a fixed rate, based on the length of your speech, in minutes.
For business speeches, it really depends on how much material you send to me. I charge an hourly rate.
How can someone else write a speech for me?
Think of speechwriting as a translation service. I take your ideas and put them in a form which pleases an audience.
Speechwriting is a collaborative process. I provide my best work, if you give clear instructions and background information. If you don’t like a particular joke or anecdote, say so; an alternative can usually be found. A good speechwriter helps you to fulfil your potential.
Do you do any public speaking training?
As an optional extra, I record a DVD of me delivering the speech. This can help you with your rehearsal by giving you an idea of the animation and phrasing required to deliver a good speech.
I can also travel to your office and give you public speaking instruction using a video camera. This is more expensive, but it can provide excellent results.
How do I pay?
I need payment before I send over the script. You can use my PayPal credit-card facility or send me a cheque, made payable to The Speechwriter.
I prefer big businesses to pay by credit card, but it is possible to send an invoice, if payment terms are agreed on in advance.
